This is something I've thought about quite a bit. Why do those of us who use publicly funded programs the least have to pay the most in taxes?? It definitely makes more sense to me to get a tax credit for being childfree and using fewer taxpayer-funded services than to get a credit for using more services. On the other hand, if we all just voted Libertarian, we may solve our own problem - although I actually consider myself to be a "moderate" Libertarian, for example I do think schools should be publicly funded.

I agree with you, Ellen. A person does not need to be a parent to be a good teacher, either. A writer does not need to write what he knows, but he can write what he can IMAGINE. Isn't that what ACTING is all about? ACTING like a parent? Whatever happened to imagination?

I'm always happy to hear from someone who is older (just by a few years) than me with the confirmation that you haven't felt regrets. I just got a new puppy, 8 weeks old, and it's really a joy to raise her along with my other two dogs.

Well put! We're approaching 7 billion now, and I was surprised to hear this week that our population in 1950 was only about 2 billion. That's such an astounding amount of growth, and it's not surprising that our quality of life has diminished. There will be more suffering world-wide if we don't get this population thing under control. Imagine a world where every child was planned and loved fully by parents who had the resources to give, and where those of us who live in richer nations could really make a difference for our brothers and sisters in poorer countries. The way I see it now, it's an uphill battle, but much could change in a short time with more speaking out on this issue.

You've given a great example of how we can enjoy a child-focused holiday just as much or more when we're not parents. I love to go skiing on Christmas morning and to make a special adult-friends dinner for Christmas Eve. Many families with children imagine how wonderful the day will be and then feel stressed financially or with kids who are unhappy with their gifts or squabbling with their siblings. I love my peaceful, quiet holidays!!

Thanks for your comments. I think it's true that as childfree adults join together for social and other gatherings, more and more "on the fence" people will see this life as a viable option. Those of us who don't have children have more time and emotional energy for our spouses, our jobs, our communities, our friends, and ourselves. I have three wonderful dogs and a husband, and they fulfill me totally.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's appalling that over 50% of pregnancies in our country are unplanned. That's an incredible figure and says so much about how people put their entire future into the hands of fate, at least with this particular situation. I'm all for educating and encouraging young women to use reliable and easy birth control (such as an IUD) until they are absolutely ready to become a mom. And you are right also to say that if a person isn't sure or isn't passionately driven to be a parent, there's no reason to have to parent. The world needs these people to do other tasks.

At the current time, about 20% of women at the end of childbearing years is not a mom, and I see this as increasing with each new generation. More and more young women are telling me that they don't want to be moms, and I'm hearing the same from young men. This will mean that folks younger than us will have more dating opportunities with their own peer group. We can at least be happy for them.

I live in one of those top childfree cities, and I've encountered exactly the same issues! It's frustrating as hell.

The age thing also comes into play. When I meet men my age (early 40s), they either assume I'm frantically seeking a sperm donor or are themselves so eager to have kids that they refuse to date me because I'm too old. The men who are really attracted to me are the ones 20 years older who already have grown kids -- but I'm not comfortable dating someone old enough to be my father!
